Michel Odent – French OB and author of 14 books in 22 languages including The Scientification of Love, Childbirth and Evolution of Homo Sapiens…He is the author of the first articles about the initiation of breastfeeding during the hour following birth, the first article about the use of birthing pools during labour, and the first article applying the “Gate Control Theory of Pain” to obstetrics. Odent recognized the importance of protecting the mother from interference during and immediately after childbirth. After retiring, Odent continued writing and speaking about need to humanize birth, most notably in his books The Nature of Birth and Breastfeeding and The Scientification of Love. Although his work is widely read by midwives, natural childbirth activists and family’s seeking nonmedicalized childbirth, it has not been mainstreamed into modern obstetric or pediatric textbooks.
